Average velocity =

(2 V1 V2) / (V1+V2)

ie., 48=(2×40×V2) / (40+V2)

V2=60 km/hr.

OR

We can find the V2 by using the equation

Average velocity =total displacement / total time taken

48=2000/(total time)

ie., total time = time in first half + time in second half

=(1000/40) + (1000/V2)

=25+(1000/V2)

Using this,

48=2000/[25+(1000/V2)]

So, V2=60km/hr.
