All those compounds which contain just carbon and hydrogen are called hydrocarbons. The atom or group of atoms which determine the properties of a compound is known as functional group. e.g. —OH (alcohol), —CHO (aldehyde), > C = C < (alkene), — C C — (alkyne) etc
