Carbon and oxygen combine in the ratio 3: 8 by mass to form carbon dioxide. How much of oxygen would be required to burn 12 g of carbon? State the law which supports this observation.​

Answer: t is given that,

C + O2 ---> CO2

in carbon dioxide, the ratio of mass of carbon to oxygen is 3 : 8.  

Let x grams be the mass of the oxygen that would be required to react completely with 6 grams of carbon. According to the law of constant proportion,

(12/x) = (3/8)

=> x = 32 g

Therefore, 32g of oxygen is required to completely react with 12 gram of carbon.
