Carbon atoms are capable of forming unlimited no. of compounds because of the these major properties of carbon :

(1) Carbon has a unique ability to form bonds with other atoms of carbon giving rise to large molecules . This property is called catenation . Carbon compounds can have long chains , branched chains or even carbon atom arranged in rings .

(2) Carbon's tetrahydral tendency is also responsible because of which it forms large no. of different compounds . Tetrahydral tendency means that carbon is capable of bonding with other four atoms of carbon or atoms of other monovalent elements .
