Hydrocarbons in which the linkages are single bonds, are called aſkanes (methane, ethane, pentane, etc.) All alkanes with one or more of the hydrogen atoms substituted by halogens are stable. Other stable compounds of carbon can also be formed when any or all of the 4 hydrogen (H) atoms are replaced by halogen atoms.
