Carbon dioxide extinguishes work by displacing oxygen, or taking away the oxygen element of the fire triangle. The carbon dioxide is also very cold as it comes out of the extinguisher, so it cools the fuel as well.

It conists of a cylinder filled with sodium bicarbonate there is also a capsule of dillute sulphuric acid in it when a knob is presses the acid in the capsule spills on the sodium bicarbonate as a result the chemical reaction takes place and carbon dioxide gas is produced and it gushes out of the cylinder this is how the carbon dioxide is used for putting out fired

Carbon dioxide is the best fire extinguisher because being heavier than oxygen, it covers the fuel like a blanket and cuts off the supply of oxygen required for continuation of fire. It is stored cylinders in high pressure in liquid form and so when it is released it expands in volume enormously and cools down the fuel. The added advantage of carbon dioxide is that it doesn't cause any harm to the electrical appliances in the event.
