carbon forms covalent bond rather than ionic bond .
As carbon has 4 electrons in it's valence shell so it is difficult for carbon to donate all valence electrons.
Also the outermost electrons of Carbon atom are strongly held by the nucleus as a result There is no possibilities of transfer of electrons. So carbon doesn't form ionic compounds.Carbons forms only the covalent bond by sharing the electrons to attain stability.
