Carbon can't gain or loss electron so therefore it forms covalent bonds with the respective elements. carbon forms strong bonds with other carbon atoms .hydrogen.oxygen nitrogen and sulphur also because of electronegativity difference between them.

Carbon forms strong compounds with heteroatoms such as hydrogen, bcoz by doing so it's valency remains satisfied and thus these compounds involving carbon and hydrogen are also generally referred to as hydrocarbons.
