carbon atom can only form covalent compound because it is tetravalent(4 - valency). it has 4 valenced electrons in its outermost shell, so to achieve the complete electronic configuration, carbon atom can loose electron or gain electron. it means that it can loose 4 electron or can gain 4 electon. But it is very much difficult for it to loose or gain 4 electron because it needs a lot of energy to do so. That is why Carbon atom form their compounds by SHARING of electrons.
And hence they form covalent compounds.
