carbon has four electrons in its valence shell (tetravalent )
It forms covalent compounds because :
#if it gains four electrons then it would be difficult for nucleus with 6 protons to hold on an electrons that is four extra electrons . Thus it cannot form {c}^{4 - } anion

# it would require a large amount of energy to remove the electrons leaving behind a carbon cation with 6 protons in its nucleus holding onto just two electrons .does it cannot form
 {c}^{4 + } cation

eg: methane = CH4

Hope it helps you!!!!
