Because Carbon has 4 valence electrones it wants 4 more in order to reach noble gas configuration (8 valence electrones)
An example would be methane: CH4
each Hydrogen Atom has one electrone but wants two, therefore each hydrogen atom shares one with the carbon.
To help you visualize look at the picture, you will see the carbon has 8 electrons and each hydrogen has 2 electrons
