Carbon has the tendency to form long chains of compound because of it's property of catination , whereas in silicon it can form compound of only 7 to 8 atoms and they are also highly unstable .

catenation tendancy due to which it can form long chains . Carbon isthe only element that can form so many different compounds because eachcarbon atom can form four chemical bonds to other atoms, and because thecarbon atom small size to fit in it forms long chain compounds.
