Carbon doesn’t contain the physical properties of a metal. Most metals are usually lustrous, opaque, solid, and some are malleable and ductile. Metals are also very good conductors. Carbon is lustrous, opaque, and solid, but it can’t be shaped into anything. It isn’t a very good conductor either. Another way to determine if an element is a gas, metal, or metalloid, is that the left side and the middle of the periodic table is filled with metals. The right side are gases or non metals (noble and halogen gases) and on most periodic tables there is a sort of staircase on the right side. Any element on the staircase, is classified as a metalloid. In this case, carbon is a non metal.
