Your answer Carbon is found free in nature in at least four distinct forms . One form, graphite , is a very soft, dark gray or black, lustrous material with either a hexagonal or rhombohedral crystalline structure. Diamond , a second crystalline form, is the hardest substance known. In a third form, the so-called amorphous carbon, the element occurs partly free and partly combined with other elements; charcoal , coal , coke , lampblack, peat , and lignite are some sources of amorphous carbon. A fourth form contains the fullerenes , stable molecules consisting of carbon atoms that arrange themselves into 12 pentagonal faces and any number greater than 1 of hexagonal faces. The most prominent of the fullerenes isbuckminsterfullerene , a spheroidal molecule, resembling a soccer ball, consisting of 60 carbon atoms. A fifth form,  white  carbon, is believed to exist. Carbon has the capacity to act chemically both as a metal and as a nonmetal. It is a constituent of all organic matter.

carbon is a versatile element . A large number of compounds are formed with it.
the characteristics of carbon relating to catination and tetravalency are

since carbon has a valency of 4 it is capable of bonding with four other atoms of carbon atoms of some other monovalent elements in order to satisfy is tetravalency carbon can form double or triple bonds also with other carbon atoms or with oxygen nitrogen etc

reasons for Carbon forming a large number of compounds are

1. catenation

carbon has the unique property or ability to form bonds with other atoms of carbon give rise to large molecules. this property is called catenation .
these compounds may have long Chains of carbon branched chain of carbon or even carbon atoms arranged in rings .

2.tetravalency

carbon has four valence electrons in its valence shell so the valency of carbon is 4 . due to this valancy carbon is tetravalent element and it has the capability of satisfied is tetravalent by sharing of electrons with some other elements and permanent covalent bonds
losing or gaining four electrons is not possible due to energy considerations so it is electrons to form covalent bonds.

3.isomers

isomers are the compounds which have the same molecular formula but different structural formula .
