In the simplest case, carbon is a reducing agent, because it reduces metal oxides to metals. For example, iron ore + carbon = iron metal + carbon monoxide:

Fe2O3 + 3C = 2Fe + 3CO(g) [T > 650C]

Change in Free Energy: ΔG(800C) = -77.4kJ (negative, so the reaction runs)

Change in Enthalpy: ΔH(800C) = +472.4kJ (positive, so the reaction is endothermic)
