Babur was succeeded by his eldest son, Nasiruddin Muhammad Humayun but Humayun faced problems of control, administration, finances and Afghan threats when he came to the throne and he also faced threats from Bahadur Shah, the ruler of Gujarat and Sher Shah Suri, the ruler of Bihar and Bengal.

Sher Shah Suri defeated Humayun at Chausa in 1539 and Kannauj in 1540 and after these defeats, Humayun was forced to leave India and flee to the Safavid court in Persia where Shah Tahmasp, the Safavid ruler, offered him help and shelter. And after an exile of 15 years, Humayun regained control of his Indian Empire with the help of Shah but however, he died soon after in 1556 when he fell down the stairs in his library in Sher Mandal, Purana Qila.
