carinal canal. (protoxylem lacuna) A longitudinal channel in the stem internode of Equisetum (horsetail) and some of its fossil relatives, positioned radially opposite a raised stem ridge (carina). Each carinal canal is arranged on the inner side of a vascular bundle.
