Answer:

7/12

Step-by-step explanation:

Total pieces= 12

Carmala ate 2/12, thus she ate 2 pieces from 12

Her brother ate 3/12, thus he ate 3 pieces from 12

Together, they ate 2+3=5 pieces= 5/12

Remaining= 12/12 - 5/12

                 = (12-5)/12

                  =7/12 left

Number of pieces the cake was cut into = 12 pieces

Carmela ate 2/12 of the cake

Her brother ate = 3/12 of the cake

Together they ate = 2/12 + 3/12

= 5/12 of the cake

Fraction of cake left = 12/12 - 5/12

= 7/12
