Case I
Two different salts are given to the students in the chemistry laboratory, Salim and javed dissolved these salts in water separately When salim dissolved the salt into water in a beaker, the beaker turn hot from the outside. When Javed dissolved the another salt into the water , the beaker turn cold from the outside. both Salim and javed rushed to the teacher and asked about the phenomenon. The teacher replies to them that when we classify the reaction in exothermiic and endothermic reaction we should check the temperature of the beaker. Exothermic reactions are the reactions in which heat is released during the process while endothermic reactions are the reactions in which heat is absorbed during the reaction. Heat

The answers are as follows -

49. The salt given to the Salim should be

(c) Calcium chloride

50. The salt given to Javed should be

(b) Ammonium nitrate

51. Reaction of magnesium with air is

(a) Exothermic reaction

52. Which of the following is an exothermic reaction?

(c) Burning of LPG

  • As mentioned, exothermic reactions result in the release of energy in the surrounding generated from the system. The released energy can be experienced in the form of sound, light, or more usually heat energy.
  • The associated properties of exothermic reactions are that they occur spontaneously. They are accompanied by an increase in entropy and a decrease in enthalpy.
  • Alternatively, an endothermic reaction absorbs the thermal energy into the system. The energy is taken from the surrounding. These reactions are accompanied by a decrease in entropy and an increase in enthalpy.
  • Calcium chloride in reaction with water results in calcium hydroxide formation.
  • Ammonium nitrate reacts with water to yield ammonium hydroxide and nitric acid.
  • Magnesium reacts with oxygen or air to form magnesium oxide.
  • Exothermic reaction from the bur ning of LPG is commonly used in households for cooking.
