Answer:

Is Prashant Bhushan wrong?

I do not like criticising the . Like most Indians, I have always held the institution in great respect. I have, in fact, great respect for all institutions that make an effort to keep our democracy safe, particularly in these troubled times. But having respect for institutions is not the same as accepting their every act as sacrosanct, beyond criticism.

People run institutions and, like all of us, they are prone to make errors, sometimes wilfully and often by mistake. It is the job, and actually the responsibility of concerned citizens, to raise doubts and question decisions taken by them. This allows the debate to come out of the closet — the only way to ensure course correction. When genuine criticism is discouraged, idle gossip flourishes. And that is far more dangerous for the integrity of our institutions. And, in the long run, for our democracy, which is already looking a bit frayed these days by the infractions of those in power.
