Amit's supervisor at AERO Distributors gives him oral instructions each morning. Today, she tells him to move four pallets to Level B, Area 3. While on Level B, Amit should pick up packets for the sales department and deliver them to Edward Ramsey. At 10:30 he should pick up Emily, an AERO board member, at the Atlantic Hotel and drive him to the airport. Finally, he is to stop at the post office and sign for the Certified Mail and deliver it to Marianne (and only Marianne) in the mailroom. Although Amit was accustomed to his supervisor's oral directions, he was confused about what she wanted him to do—but he said nothing. Amit takes the pallets to Level B, Area 3, and picks up the packets for the sales department, which he drops at Edward's desk. "So far, so good," he thought. But he couldn't remember the name of the man he is to pick up at the Atlantic Hotel nor the exact time to pick him up. He calls the hotel and asks if a man is waiting to be picked up by someone from AERO. The answer is "No, no one seems to be waiting." "When someone asks about a ride to the airport," Amitsays, "please tell him to take a cab." Amit then drives to the post office, signs for the Certified Mail, and drops it off to no one in particular in the mailroom. He goes back to his workstation assuming that he followed his supervisor's directions.
