THE RIVERS AND THE WATER RESERVOIRS ARE SUPPOSED TO BE THE LIFE LINE OF ANY CIVILIZATION .THE ALARMING INCREASE IN THE LEVEL OF POLLUTION IS A SERIOUS THREAT. WHICH HAS TO BE TAKEN UP WITH UTMOST PRIORITY. THE CITY OF GORAKHPUR IS ALSO NOT UNTOUCHED WITH THIS SERIOUS ISSUE.THE POLLUTION LEVEL OF THE MAJOR WATER SOURCES IN AND AROUND THE CITY IS GOING ON INCREASING RAPIDLY. ACCORDING TO THE WORLD HEALTH ORGANISATION DATA'S THE QUANTITY OF SULPHATE IN THE WATER SHOULD NOT BE MORE THAN 600 MILLIGRAMS PER LITRE AND IF IT RISES ABOVE THAN THIS LEVEL THE WATER SHOULD BE REJECTED IT ALSO SAYS THAT THE STANDARD LEVEL OF CHLORIDE SHOULD BE 250 MILLIGRAMS PER LITRE. THE DATA'S OF A STUDY SAY THAT THE SULPHATE AND THE CHLORIDE LEVEL IN THE RAMGARH TAAL , THE ONLY WATER RESERVOIR IN THE CITY HAS RISEN TO 800 MILLIGRAMS PER LITRE AND 400 MILLIGRAMS PER LITRE RESPECTIVELY.ON THE OTHER HAND THEIR LEVEL IN THE AMI RIVER WHICH FLOWS FROM THE SOUTH WEST OF THE CITY HAS REACHED TO 900 MILLIGRAM PER LITRE AND 500 MILLIGRAMS PER LITRE RESPECTIVELY .EXCESS OF SULPHATE CONTENT IN THE WATER CAUSES SEVERE GASTROINTESTINAL PROBLEMS AND THAT OF CHLORIDE CAUSES PROBLEMS RELATED TO BONES.THE CONTINUOUS USE OF THIS POLLUTED WATER IS DEFINITELY A SERIOUS THREAT TO HEALTH
THIS HAS NOT ONLY CAUSED A SERIOUS THREAT TO THE LIVING BEINGS BUT ALSO THE FLORA AND FAUNA. THE AMI RIVER IS ON THE VERGE OF EXTINCTION AND THE WATER HAS BECOME POISE NOUS A REPORT SAYS THAT ABOUT 90% OF THE SPECIES OF FLORA AND FAUNA HAVE DISAPPEARED. THE OTHER RIVER RAPTI HAS ALSO BEING HIT BY THE INCREASING POLLUTION AS THE MAIN SOURCE OF POLLUTION IS THE SE AVER AND THE DOMESTIC WASTE BEING FLOWN IN TO THE RIVER SAME IS THE CASE WITH THE RAN GARH TAAL.
THE POLLUTION LEVEL OF THE GROUND WATER IN THE CITY IS ALSO INCREASING DAY BY DAY. THE INCREASING NUMBERS OF PATIENTS OF CANCER, HEPATITIS,TYPHOID,GASTRITIS PROVES THE FACT . .
THE MOST SENSITIVE AREAS IN THE CITY ARE GHANTAGHAR ,GOLGHAR, NAUSARH AND BAXIPUR. ACCORDING TO THE EXPERTS THE PURE DRINKING WATER SHOULD HAVE 50-60 PPM OF TOTAL DISSOLVED SOLID [TDS] AND IF THE TDS IS ABOVE 500 IT IS NOT GOOD FOR HEALTH.THE LEVEL OF TDS IN SOME AREAS OF THE CITY HAS RISEN TO 12OO THE MOST ALARMING SITUATION IS IN THE AREAS OF GHANTAGHAR ,GOLGHAR, BAXIPUR, AND NAUSARH . THE TDS LEVEL FOUND IN BAXIPUR AND NAUSARH IS BETWEEN 1100-1200 GHANTAGHAR IS BETWEEN 900-1000 GOLGHAR TIWARIPUR AND MOHADDIPUR IS AROUND 900 WHEREAS THE TDS LEVEL IN ARYANAGAR IS AROUND 750. THE LEVEL OF TDS IN OTHER AREAS IS ALSO INCREASING AND WAY ABOVE THE STANDARD MARK..THE EXPERTS SAY THAT THE WATER WITH INCREASED TDS LEVEL CONTAINS PHOSPHORUS,ARSENIC,LEAD, CADMIUM, CALCIUM, NICKEL,MAGNESIUM AND MANY MORE ELEMENTS WHICH ARE HAZARDOUS AND COULD CAUSE SERIOUS DAMAGE TO HEALTH.
