Ashoka won manynwars and then he had a war with Kalinga (name for coastal orrisa). He won the war and then saw the bloodshed .

Hundreds of people were captured .

Thousands of people died

This upset Ashoka .

He said "Whenever an independent land is captured hundre ads of people die . Many more are held captive . People who are nice to their friends and family, slaves and neighbors die or lose their loved ones .

So i have thought of dhamma . I think winning people over by dhamma is better that winning people by force ."

Ashoka was the only king in the history of the world who gave up war after winning a kingdom .
