CASE STUDY ON CROP WATER REQUIREMENTS
Mwimba College as implementing partner of Green Innovation Centres for Agriculture and Food Sector (GIAE) has received funds to pilot solar irrigation pumps in Kathobwa Village and Kayesa village. The maximum pumping rate of each pump is 15000 L/h with head of 7m driven by 2500W solar panels. The system has also a delivery pipe of 25m. As students from who learnt IWM you have been asked to provide some inputs on the preliminary design of an irrigation system at Kathobwa village.
Given that Kathobwa village has:an irrigable area of 4 ha,
Main crop that is grown is maize with average KC value of 1.1.
An experiment using class A evaporation pan reveals that on day 1, water level was 150mm and after 24 hours, the levels dropped to 144mm. The Kpan is 0.75.

What is the reference evapotranspiration (Eto) of Kathobwa village? (4 marks)

What will be the ETC for the maize grown in Kathobwa village? (4 marks)If the readily available soil water is 30mm/day, what will be irrigation frequency of the area (2 marks)

Assuming that, there was no rainfall, groundwater contributions are negligible and water quality for Kathobwa is good standard for irrigation. The system to be used has an overall efficiency of 60%.

What will be the gross water requirements for the 4ha field of maize in (L/day?). (5 marks)Assuming the pump is delivering the same 15000L/h,

how long should the whole 4 ha be irrigated (note: relate the Gross requirements and the discharge)? (5 marks)
