Case Study
Saurabh Gupta has started a new company as 'Best perfumes', which will be manufacturing
artificial perfumes, to be used as an input in the cosmetics industry. Delhi is strategic market for
Best perfumes as there are number of cosmetic mfg. units located at Delhi. The consumption is
also high as these units feeds the whole India. However, the competition is also tough as there
are few established companies already supplying perfumes to these Delhi units. Mr. Gupta is in
the process of building his team and gives an add in newspapers for appointing a sales officer in
Delhi. He receives a lot of profiles, but short lists & interviews the followings:
1. Rajat Kumar: - An MBA in marketing with one year experience in Pharma. A smart
young man with good communication skills and a local Delhi guy. However, he has no
contacts in the cosmetics industry.
2. Anil Sharma: - A graduate who started his career with a perfume manufacturer in Delhi.
However, after selling perfumes to cosmetic units in Delhi for one year, he was shifted to
Rajasthan. From last five years he is in Rajasthan dealing with cosmetic industry. He is
not in touch t Delhi units. He wants to come back to his home state.
3. Aman Kapoor: - A graduate with three years of experience who has been working with
Emson perfumes since 2007. When he started his career. Emson is a leading
manufacturer of perfumes & supplies to large number of cosmetic units in Delhi. Aman is
their sales officer for the past three years, so he has developed informal relations with
almost all clients. He wants to leave his present job for a rise in salary.
Best perfumes are new entrants in the market and there is going to be a natural cognitive
dissonance among their potential buyers. All these candidates are expecting the same level of
salary and perks.
