Case Study :

The owner of a house wants to get the windows decorated using

color-stained glass of geometric shapes. The window is squareshaped. He designed the window using squared and rectangular

pieces as below:

(i) If the side of the bigger square is 12 inches long and that of the

smaller square is 8 inches, find the sum of the areas of the 2

rectangles.

(ii) If the length and the breadth of each rectangle are 11 inches and 9

inches respectively, what is the area of each square?

The rectangle ABCD has 8 such squares. Therefore, its area is 8 sq cm. Similarly we can find the areas of the other rectangles by counting the number of squares. We also note the length and breadth of each rectangle and write in the table below:
