Hi.
During the Early Vedic Period, Varna system has been formed. According to this, the peoples during this time divided the peoples among four groups according to the occupation. They are----
1- Brahmans.----- religious or priest peoples
2-Kshatriya-----Peoples who  belongs to rich family example princes, kings, etc or war warriors.
3-Vaishyas-----The peoples who did agriculture or cattles rearing
4-Shudras------Persons doing lower jobs.
This system become rigid with time and also the condition became worst that
Shudras are not allowed to live within the city,ad also they are regarded as untouchables. With the progressing time inter caste marriages are also banned and Shudras are not allowed to show their face to Brahmans.
This system is too much rigid and divided the Hindus into four major caste
[caste means the groups in which the vedic peoples has divided themselves according to their occupation].

Hope it will help u.

Have a nice day.
