Casteism is a curse upon democracy because
1) Most of the political leaders and parties use caste as a way to get more votes.
2)These parties promise the development of a lower castes and play with their sentiments.
3) Talking only about caste can make people feel that they are not united. They believe that they belong to a different social division.
4)Caste not only divides people but also breaks the unity of nation which often leads to conflicts between people. Sometimes the conflicts also turn into riots.

Hope it is clear enough to understand and helpful... ^_^

Today among the divisive forces which afflict our national life, disrupt the bonds of unity among the Indian people and affect its development, caste is the major one. The frequent instances of caste confrontation, leading even to occasional outbursts of violence both in urban centers and the country-side force themselves on our attention. When during elections, the political party or the party agenda do not remain the central issue, we witness a rising tide of caste identification and caste animosities. In the last decade, a new focus of caste politics has emerged. Together with its attendant spin offs the emergence of new caste based organizations, growing polarization along caste lines, violence and reservation conflicts the caste has embedded it self firmly in politico economic fabric of the country. .

Caste ism violates the basic principles enshrined in the Constitution for promoting a new democratic polity, namely, the principles of justice, equality and above all fraternity assuring the unity and integrity of the Nation.

India’s political structure and processes are democratic, but its social base is rather feudal, tribal canoeist and communal. This pre democratic sociological base affects the working of democratic politics. Democratic facilities like fundamental rights relating to free speech, expression and association, participation in electoral system, formation of parties, free media and press are misused for maintaining canoeist identity. This is possible because while the form of Indian politics is secular, its style is essentially canoeist. Some caste leaders play a different game they want modernization of their separate caste identity intact as well. This helps them and their caste, to become a modernized interest group.

Thus caste has vitiated the atmosphere of elections, by projecting pre-democratic restrictive identities, promoting narrow royalties, thus weakening. the modernization of the polity. Moreover by building caste associations, pressure groups and lobbies, it seeks to retain outmoded and outdated caste cohesion in national and state politics, which is an impediment to building up a secular. society. Catechism also adversely affects the grassroots Panchayati Raj system, by seeking to retain the traditional mould of dominant and dominated castes, and thus frustrate the emergence of the new democratic culture of free and equal Citizenship, irrespective of caste, creed or birth. In party politics and in ministry formation its role contributes to avoidable bickering, narrow bargaining and jockeying for power, which ‘often leads to political instability and confusion. Thus catechism creates tension, suspicion, fear and an atmosphere of violence by building militancy on caste lines
