Dry ether is used as a catalyst for the preparation of grignards reagent.
Diethyl ether is prepared in the laboratory by the reactin of ethanol with conc. H2SO4 at 140 degree Celsius.
Grignard reagent cannot be prepared under moist conditions because the active hydrogen present in water reacts with it forming alkane.
Hope this helps.
