Salts of the tropylium cation can be stable, even with nucleophiles of moderate strength e.g., tropylium tetrafluoroborate and tropylium bromide (see below). Its bromide and chloride salts[20] can be made from cycloheptatriene and bromine or phosphorus pentachloride, respectively.
