(1) Height of a student:Continuous Variable

(2) Distance covered:Continuous Variable

(3) Number of students in a class:Discrete Variable

Explanation:

  • In Statistics, continuous variables can take a continuous range of numerical values including fractions, decimals etc.Hence, the values of continuous variables can be numerically continuous or consistent.
  • On the other hand, discrete variables can only take distinct or separate whole numbers or integers and cannot be expressed in terms of any fraction, ratio or decimals.
  • In this case, note that height and distance can be commonly expressed in terms of decimals or fractions such as a height of 5.6 inches or a total distance of 23.4 kilometers. But,number of students cannot be denoted as a fraction or decimal or in other words,we cannot say there are 30.5 students in the class.Number of students can only take a distinct whole number or integer.
