• silicon has large size as compared to carbon

Carbon and Silicon have the property of chain formation (i.e, catenation) .Carbon catenate forming ring compounds or long stable chains.

1) For catenation to occur, the M-M bonding must be strong.
2) The bond energy of M-M must be similar to those between M and other particular element.
eg - M-O Bond.
