THE ABOVE COMPONENTS ARE USED IN AN ELECTROCHEMICAL CELL.
- Cathode : Graphite (carbon)
- Anode : Aluminium
- Electrolyte : Dilute Sulphuric Acid
Now, use of each component :
- Graphite cathode: It is a good conductor of electricity, has a high melting point. Hence it is used in negative terminals.
- Aluminium anode: It has higher electrochemical capacity, has a comparitively higher driving voltage, is lighter and is cheap. Hence used.
- Sulphuric Acid : It is a strong electrolyte, and hydrogen is produced at cathode and oxygen is produced at anode.
The same apparatus can be used for ELECTROLYSIS :
- Used for purification and extraction of metals (e.g. Copper)
- Used for electroplating.
- Used for production of Chlorine.
Hope It Helps.
