these rays are produced in a discharge tube. actually sir j j thompson assumed the conditions of a lightning occurence and according to thse conditions he adjusted the pressure to 10^-3 _10^-4 mm of Hg , and supplied 10000 volts and kept helium gas in the discharge tube. due to the voltage current starts flowing through a stream of particles (which were electrons which carry the - ve charge) moving in the tube from the cathode to anode and as these are appearing to generating from the cathode these were named as cathode rays..

Cathode rays are originating from cathode as cathode is negatively charged. These rays then hit the gas sample inside the tube and ionize it. The electrons ejected from the ionisation of the gas travel towards anode. These rays are actually electrons produced from the ionisation of the gas inside the tube
