Bovidae. Cattle consisting of cows, buffaloes, etc. are all amongst our society's important domesticated animals.

All of them are hoofed mammals or even-toed ungulates, belonging to the species Bos taurus of the family Bovidae.

They are also referred to as bovids. The cattle was initially identified by Carolus Linnaeus and it was recognised to be of three distinct species.

These were as follows.

(1) The Bos taurus, that is the European cattle. It has similar types from Asia as well as Africa.

(2) The Bos indicus or the humped cattle or Zebu which is found in India.

(3) And finally, the extinct Bos primigenius which consisted of the aurochs.
