The first wave of colonialism resulted in acquisition of many territories including islands devoted to certain cash crops like sugarcane and coffee and for certain raw materials and plantations were established. To arrange labour in these islands such as West Indies, labour was sought and using coercion millions of Indian and Chinese labourers went to work on plantations, in mines, and in road and railway construction projects around the world.Majority of workers were indentured and came from the present-day regions of eastern Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, central India and the dry districts of Tamil Nadu.Socio economic changes such as decline of cottage industries, increasing rents had an impact. Most of the labourers were deeply indebted and were forced to migrate in search of work. Many migrants agreed totake up work hoping toescape poverty or oppression in their home villages.Recruitment agents were used who some times even abductedlabour.
