immediate cause was the calling of the ESTATES GENERAL in 1789 ad after 175 years.It generated much excitement as the members of Third Estate( middle class,Other professionals,Peasants) were determined to put a check on the high handedness of other two estates(nobles and clergy)

WHY?

On the eve of revolution , the clergy and nobility enjoyed numerous Privileges and led a life of luxury , while the third estate lived a wrecked life . They had to bear most of the taxes , thus this gave a spark to French Revolution.
