Rural poverty in India:
The extent of poverty in India can be caused by many factors such as geographical, personal, biological as well as economical.
More than 300 million people in India were considered poor and disadvantaged under India's Eleventh National Development Program. India managed with considerable effort to reduce the deprivation from 55% in 1973 to nearly 27% (326 million poor) in 2004.
In rural areas, 216.5 million people have been poorly estimated in recent years (2011-2012). And yet, almost one-quarter of India's total population lives below the poverty line, and the majority of the poor live in rural India and villages. Chhattisgarh is India's poorest state, where 40 million living below the poverty line.
