Causes for the rise of Sufi Movement are:

  1. After the death of Prophet Muhammad, religious differences arose between the two sects of the Muslim community --the Shias and the Sunnis.
  2. These led to prolonged and mutual hostility and bitter quarrels between the two sects.
  3. The religious conflict, marked by extreme intolerance, posed a serious threat to the islamic principles of brotherhood and montheism(one God).
  4. There was in an increasing tendency among the  Muslim rulers and the nobles to lead lives of luxury, opulence and indulgence. This was opposed to the Islamic principles of simple living and piety.

The reasons for the increase in Sufis' movement are:

  • Sufism facilitated the acquisition of Afghani Delhi Sultanate rulers in ordinary society.
  • By creating a harmonious medieval culture that tolerates and appreciates non-Muslims, Sufi saints have contributed to the growth of stability, indigenous language literature, and devotional music in India.
  • One common reason for Islamic movements and interpretations was the reaction against priestly rule and the love of culture in both religions.
  • Some describe Sufism as complex; it is like a stream, which combines volume with a combination of inputs from many countries.
  • Once the Sufi order had its roots in various parts of India, it followed its stages of growth, growth and revival.
  • This was largely due to indigenous circumstances but the impact of development on Sufism outside of India continued.
