Beas river, is one of the five major rivers of Punjab is reported to be polluted seriously.

This river supplies water for agriculture, hydro-power generation and for city water supply facilities. serves as a source of water to cities like Amritsar, Gurdaspur, Pathankot and other towns and villages. Presently turned into a hotbed of water pollution.

Uncountable fishes have been died.

The root cause is huge contamination of the river by molasses a by-product of sugar mills situated on its shore at Kiri Afghani village in Gurdaspur district.

When molasses got mixed with the river water, the biochemical oxygen demand BOD of water decreased.

This reduce the dissolved oxygen levels in water, which ultimately caused death of fish and other aquatic animals.

Way for pollution control.

The following procedures are to be followed strictly:

1) All effluents from sugar mills discharging in the river must be banned immediately.

2) Water quality monitoring at the downstream of the sugar mills are to be conducted weekly throughout the year

3) All sugar mill should install water treatment plant with cent percent water recycle.

4) No industrial effluent will be allowed to be discharge into the river
