Answer:
Colonialism has been a staple of Human societies since the dawn of civilization. In my opinion, the causes or reasons have been the following.
- when a region or city is overpopulated, people would migrate to new areas and settle to create new colonies. Think of the ancient Greeks and Phoenicians for instance who created new colonies and imposed their way of life on people all over the Mediterranean. This way of spreading colonialism is usually sprang by the lower class and outsiders of societies since they have nothing and are seeking new opportunities
- when two rival kingdoms fight proxy wars, inevitably they force smaller nation under they influence or outright conquered them. The ruling elites are the ones pushing this form of colonialism and are almost always the beneficiaries.
- if a region holds valuable or abundant resources, if it's located on an important trade route, it will be colonized by more powerful nations. This occured most in mercantile societies or during the stage of an empire's life cycle called “the Age of Commerce.” Merchants and private businesses dominates this form of colonialism. In fact, the merchant class emerges or surpasses the traditional ruling class in wealth.
- this one is natural because whenever a tribe acquires technological superiority and creates a more advanced society, it naturally subjugates neighbouring tribes.
