Causes which lead to deforestation : In the colonial period, cultivation expanded rapidly for various reasons.First the British encouraged the production of commercial crops like jute,sugar,wheat and cotton.The demand food grains and raw material increased in 19th century due to industrial growth in Europe.

The British initially considered Forests as useless as they brought no revenue .They tried to bring the forest land under cultivation as agricultural would bring them taxes.
