बाढ़ के तीन प्रकार के कारण हो सकते हैं।

1. प्राकृतिक घटना - भारी वर्षा और तूफान, अत्यधिक दिनों तक वर्षा, उच्च प्रवाह और तूफान।

2. देखभाल में कमी - त्रुटिपूर्ण मोरी तंत्र, खराब अपवहन तंत्र, पानी के निकायों की अपर्याप्त देखरेख।

3. विकास और योजना की समस्या - बाढ़ भूमि में असंगत विकास, भूमि पर इस प्रकार का निर्माण

जिससे वर्षा के जल को बहने का रास्ता न मिले, बाढ़ नियंत्रण की योजना में कमी।
