CAUSES OF WATER POLLUTION
- Industrial sewage: Industries of paper, textile, sugar Mills, leather, paint produce waste containing highly toxic substances like lead, Mercury, arsenic and their compounds. The discharge of untreated industrial sewage directly into the water bodies is one of the main causes of water pollution.
- Domestic sewage: Liquid waste from kitchens and toilets are discharge into rivers through sewer systems causing water pollution.
- Human activities: Bathing of human beings and animals in or near lakes, rivers, etc., pollutes the water bodies.
- Agriculture wastes: In modern agriculture, large quantities of pesticides and fertilizers are used. The excess of these in organic chemicals find their way into water bodies that results in water pollution. Even ground water is polluted due to excessive use of pesticides and weedicides.
- Oil spills: Oil spills from used tankers is one of the major causes of water pollution that affects the Marine plants and animals.
