Floppies are magnetic storage (like tape). They will be tempory until the magnetic field weakens (corrupting the data).

re-writing the data will restore the magnetic field.

Generally a magnetic field can last 5–10 years or more (given optimal storage conditions).

.

CDs are either of 2 things:

permanent (stamped in a press like music cds)

tempory (cd-r /rw) write to once or re-write, unfortunately these mediums are both tempory, with around double the life of floppy (10+ years).

Some ‘premium’ write once cd-r are rated at 100 years … but as that still isnt ‘forever’, it can be taken as non-permanent. Though I would probably class 100years as a semi-permanent state.

.

rule of thumb: anything you write will be tempory.
