Answer:

There are various Holi legends but the most popular one is about Lord Vishnu's ardent devotee Prahlada and demoness Holika. Prahlada was the son of demon Hiranyakashipu and his wife Kayadhu. Hiranyakashipu was the enemy of Lord Vishnu and was highly against of his son being devotee of Lord Vishnu. One day, he planned to kill his son with the help of his sister Holika. Holika had divine shawl, gifted by Lord Brahma, to protect her from fire. She lured Prahlada to sit with her in a huge bonfire but due to grace of Lord Vishnu, the divine shawl protected Prahlada instead of Holika. Hence demoness Holika was burned to ashes and Prahlada came out of the fire unhurt. The festival of Holi got its name from this legend and Holi bonfire is known as Holika Dahan.

It is believed that Holika was created to ward off all sorts of fear. Hence Holika, although a Demoness, is worshipped along with Prahlada before Holika Dahan. Holika Puja bestows power, prosperity and wealth.
