If you want to call it a fine day, yes I thought it was. So, one fine day I went for a sumptuous dinner with my huge family. We planned on feasting on Chinese dishes and we stepped into one of the highest rated restaurants.
As for me, every good feast is the best feast ever. I was filled as much as there is no more space left in my stomach. Well, each time a new dish arrived I thought the same but ended up feasting on a continuous basis. And finally, the end of the fine dinner was nigh. For if I ate a little more, I could blast.
And then we receive our fortune cookies at the end which is a Chinese tradition. By nature, everyone was eager to read their fortune rather than to concentrate on the cookie, after all, who would concentrate on a cookie now?
With my eyes enlarged, and with a rise of my heartbeat — perhaps, this message was never received by anyone who opens a fortune cookie.
My heart dropped down when I read the note. It said, “Your life is in danger. Say nothing to anyone. You must leave the city immediately and never return. Repeat: say nothing….”. My first reaction was, “Danger? Say Nothing?, Say Nothing?, Danger?, Say Nothin?, Nothing?, Nothing?….” The words kept repeating the television of my mind. All at once, I lost the joy of the fine diner.
As usual, the whole family was busy packing to leave the restaurant. I was pretty sure no one received a note like mine.
At first, I was with puzzled eyes. After a while, I thought, “This is for fun, no one believes it”. And the questions wheeled over in my mind. But Chinese believe in fortune cookies. Why do they believe? They are not going to simply believe it? There should be something. What if it is true? And what if there is real magic in these cookies? What if my life is in real danger? Whom do I speak to about this? I was sure my family would just laugh it off if I tell them. What do I do? Danger? Say nothing? Say nothing? Leave the city? And say nothing? All these wired interlinked questions kept reeling in front of my eyes.
The family was quite huge, so they were still packing to move. So I rushed to the reception. And I enquired the beautiful miss lady sitting there. “Are these fortune cookies real?”, I asked her trying to maintain a smile. Her smile was mixed up with different opinions. She said, “It depends on your fortune”. I didn’t exactly understand her.
I rushed to the waiter and tried to have a casual talk. I asked him, "Hey! Do you keep giving these cookies to everyone? What if you are out of them?”. The waiter replied, “There is always a fortune miss, can you escape?”. “Oh my! these people seem crazy”, I thought. And there was the manager, who came to inquire about the experience. So I asked him, “Hello sir1, Do you actually have both good and bad in these fortune notes?”. He confidently nodded and said, “The note depends on your fortune miss”. He left a soft smile and continued with his enquiry.
I still didn’t know what else I could do next. These questions revolved all over my mind. My brain was heating up. “Say nothing!!”, this was what running in my mind. I was taking up so much stress all through the drive back home. The note was being squeezed inside my left hand.
I walked inside our home and was walking restlessly into my room. “Cherry!”, someone called me. My dad was. He asked me, “you seem so stressed up? what is it?”. I nodded saying it’s nothing. He compelled me and forced me to reveal what it was. I gave him the note.
He read the note. Owing to my stress and for whatever reasons, he didn’t laugh it away. Ours is a huge family but we live in different portions of apartments close by. So he gave a call to everyone for an important meeting.
So in the meeting, he started his speech as usual. He said, “One can write his/her fortune, sometime we can’t — the fortune decides itself”. He continued, “We all might have received our fortune cookies today, but this is a note received by someone in the group. I don’t want to reveal the name but the note is a threatening one.” I just want to tell you all, “Fortune is not written in advance, it is a free will. Your fortune is probably in your hands and in your hard work. We leave the rest to God and hope for the best. You only trust papers and other things if you don’t believe in yourselves”.
He picked an empty wall hanging photo frame from the storeroom. He fit in the fortune note into this photo frame which seemed quite huge for the piece of paper.
“There!, I’m hanging this paper here”, he said. He continued, “Let us call it all of our fortunes together. You decide if you are to believe in this or believe in your strong self. One fine day you will come back to this paper and ask it to turn itself away.”
Everyone was so inspired by his speech. Me too. I went back into my room continuing with my homework. “Indeed, every day is a fine day with a great family”, I thought.
