cell is known as structural unit because it forms the basic structure of a living organisms. cells combine to form tissues and tissues further combine to form organs . thus they form structure. cells also contain genes which are pased to offsprings which contain protein synthesis information and thus further helps body to form structure as our body is made up.of proteins. in noth multicellular and unicellular organisms cells perform some basic functions likerespiration, digestion,
nutrition etc. thus it is also a functional unit. cells are the building block of body.
