Cells are the basic building blocks of all living organisms. The human body is composed of countless number of cells, all with their own specialized function.
Cells are considered the basic units of life because they come in discrete and easily recognizable packages. Cells are surrounded by a structure called the cell membrane — which, much like the walls of a building, serves as a boundary between the cell's internal and external environments. The cell membrane is sometimes also referred to as the plasma membrane.
Cells provide structure for the body, take in nutrients from food and carry out important functions.
Cells group together to form tissues, which in turn group together to form the organs of the body including the vital organs such as the heart and brain.
Cells contain a number of functional structures called organelles that carry out tasks such as making proteins, processing chemicals and generating energy for the cell.
The nucleus in control of the cell, is based at the centre of the cell; the 'genome' is found within the nucleus. The genome is an organism’s complete set of DNA, including all of its genes. Each genome contains all of the information needed to build and maintain that organism. In humans, a copy of the entire genome—more than 3 billion DNA base pairs—is contained in all cells that have a nucleus.
