The cell wall is impregnated with silica in Diatoms.

  • The cell wall of diatoms contains two thecae that are overlapping and form a parallelogram.
  • This layer is composed of silica which makes the structure of diatoms hard. It is called a frustule.
  • The presence of silica does not allow the exchange of molecules from outside to inside or vice-a-versa. Hence there are small pores on the frustule to facilitate this action.
  • The pores are also used for the removal of waste and mucilage.
  • After the death of diatoms, the silica remains to form diatomaceous earth.
